At Suproto, our complex sheet metal bending involves intricate processes to shape the metal into sophisticated and detailed forms. This technique often requires high precision machinery and skilled operators to ensure the final product meets the design specifications. The process can include multiple bends, acute angles, or specific shapes such as waveforms.
Air bending is one of the most common sheet metal fabrication for bending metal sheets. The sheet metal is placed over a die, and a punch comes down and presses the sheet metal into the die, creating a bend. The punch does not force the metal entirely into the die; instead, it leaves a small amount of space or “air”. Based on my experience, the final angle of the bend is determined by how far the punch descends into the die.
Bottoming, also known as coining, is a more forceful process than air bending. The sheet metal is pressed firmly into the die with the punch, which imprints the exact shape of the die onto the metal. This method offers a high degree of precision but requires more force and, therefore, more powerful machinery than air bending. The result is a sharply defined bend that maintains its shape even in heavy use.
